The Design Process in Israel

A design application may be filed based on any industrial object or product which has a striking form, shape or decoration, which is either novel or original, and which has not been published in Israel prior to the application date by way of sales, marketing, exhibition or publication in catalogues, magazines and the like in circulation in Israel.

Filing Requirements
An application form stating applicant name and address
Official filing fee (approximately $40)
At least three identical pictures viewed from different directions (perspective view, bottom view, etc.)The applicant should decide on the number of perspectives to be submitted in accordance with the nature of the object. Photographs or drawings must be attached to white folio size paper, and the applicant should indicate the relevant direction on each picture. Engineering drawings or sketches are not accepted. Measurements are not relevant to the registration of a design.

Sets
Only one item may be registered with each application. However, in the case of a "set", i.e. a group of items of a similar nature, customarily used together, such as cutlery, crockery etc., more than one item may be submitted in a single application.

Examination and Certificate of Registration
The Patent Office conducts a search of registered designs. If an identical or very similar design is not found, the application is allowed and a certificate of registration is granted. A certificate of registration is granted for a period of 5 (five) years from the date of application and may be extended for two additional periods of 5 (five) years upon payment of fees in the respective periods.

Publication
After the certificate is presented, the Office publishes the name of the design, the class of the design according to the international classification system, the filing date of the design and the filing number in the monthly Patents and Designs Journal. The Office may not publish any picture of a likeness of the design for a period of two years following the application date.
